Rentals a five-minute walk from the beach in Port A

Sand dunes and the Gulf shoreline at Port Aransas Beach, Texas, on a clear morning

If the whole point of the trip is being able to walk to the sand in about five minutes, the shortest answer in our portfolio is Executive Keys. Two of the condos we manage there, Unit 404 and Unit 113, are described by their own listings as a five-minute walk to the beach, with the community pool and rec room closer still. Everything else below is a question of how many of you there are and whether you want a pool of your own.

The two condos with the walk written into the listing

Unit 404 sits on the second floor of Building 4, a two-bedroom of about 1,100 square feet that sleeps eight: a queen in the primary, two doubles in the second bedroom, two bathrooms so the post-beach rinse queue doesn't become a thing. The balcony looks over the pool, the courtyard and the Gulf beyond, which is the view you want with the first coffee of the day. One caveat worth knowing before you book: Building 4 has no elevator, so if someone in your party would rather not do stairs with luggage, say so and we'll point you elsewhere.

Unit 113 is the other end of the scale, a 432-square-foot efficiency on the ground floor of Building 1 with a queen bed, a convertible sofa and a full kitchen tucked into the same footprint. Three guests, one bathroom, a private patio opening onto grass. For a couple who intend to spend the daylight hours outside and come back only to shower and sleep, it does everything a bigger place would and costs less to do it.

Same complex, ground floor, kids who need grass

There's a third Executive Keys condo worth putting on the list: Unit 307, a ground-floor two-bedroom with the same sleeping arrangement as 404, a queen and two doubles for eight. Its patio opens straight onto the pool view and the grassy area, which matters more than it sounds if you're travelling with small children who need somewhere to burn off the last hour before dinner. No stairs, no elevator question. Its own description puts the beach a short walk away rather than naming the minutes, so if the five-minute figure is doing real work in your decision, 404 and 113 are the ones that state it.

All three of these condos include a heated community pool, a full kitchen and free parking. That last one is less trivial here than elsewhere: parking along the beach between Marker 0 and Marker 62 needs a city permit, which runs twelve dollars, though there are free stretches by the jetties and Horace Caldwell Pier and between Markers 52 and 58. If you're walking from the condo, none of that is your problem.

If you want a pool that belongs only to you

Walking distance and a private pool rarely live in the same house, and in Port A they almost never do at a price a couple would accept. The exception in our book is No Plana Cabana, which the listing places less than a quarter-mile from the beach: three storeys, six bedrooms, six bathrooms, sixteen guests, a fenced private pool with palm trees and loungers, and a full-size shuffleboard table on the ground floor that settles more arguments than it starts. Four balconies with partial Gulf views. Parking for up to nine vehicles, including room for a boat, which is the kind of detail you only appreciate when you've tried to park a trailer in a beach town in July.

It's a lot of house, and if you're two people it is absurdly too much house. For a family reunion where the cousins need a bunk room and the adults need to be somewhere else, it's the one to beat. Note the layout: the master suite is on the main level, the bunk rooms are downstairs by the entertainment space, and there's a loft lounge with a kitchenette upstairs. People spread out without colonising the kitchen.

In town instead, with the shops out the door

Some people want the beach five minutes away and the restaurants closer still. Mills Fishing Cabin is newly built, about 900 square feet, two bedrooms and two baths sleeping up to six on a king, a queen and a double hide-a-bed. Its listing puts it in the heart of town, minutes from the beach and from the boutiques, and it's golf cart accessible, which in Port A is a genuine transport category rather than a novelty.

Two things decide it. There's a crib, so families with a baby don't have to haul one across Texas. And it isn't pet-friendly, which rules it out for a good number of people reading this. Out back there's a porch, a charcoal BBQ pit and a cornhole set in the yard. If you're a larger party, the neighbouring Crooked Cabin can be booked alongside it.

How to choose between them

  • Two or three of you, minimal fuss: Unit 113. Efficiency layout, full kitchen, pool a couple of minutes from the door, pets allowed.
  • Family of six to eight, upstairs is fine: Unit 404, for the balcony and the Gulf view. Remember the stairs.
  • Family of six to eight, ground floor preferred: Unit 307, patio onto grass, pool a few steps away.
  • Small family with a baby who wants to be in town: Mills Fishing Cabin, crib included, no pets.
  • Ten to sixteen people and a private pool: No Plana Cabana.

What the walk actually looks like

Port Aransas is a small island town, and beach access runs all along the dunes at its edge. The sand here is driveable with a permit, which changes the character of a beach day: you'll see trucks and canopies set up in rows rather than a single strip of towels. The Horace Caldwell Pier reaches out from I.B. Magee Beach Park at the north end, a 1,240-foot elevated fishing pier run by Nueces County, lit at night, with bait and tackle on site. It's a reliable evening walk even if you've no intention of fishing.

Coming onto the island from Aransas Pass, you'll take the ferry, which is free and runs around the clock. The crossing itself is quick, under ten minutes, but the wait is the variable: summer weekends can stack up badly, and there's a large construction project underway at the Port Aransas landing that can close ramps. Check the live wait feed before you leave rather than planning around a fixed number. South of town, State Highway 361 runs down Mustang Island to the state park, where the Gulf beachfront stretches for five miles and the bay side has paddling trail segments running about twenty miles in total.
